Chase Close Amersham

Chase Close, Amersham

Completed: November 2017

Completed throughout 2015, this £500k project included a loft conversion, a front, side and garage extension, and also the significant remodelling of an architecturally unappealing early 1960s detached house, which did, however have the benefit of occupying an impressive, elevated position within a substantial sloping plot on the outskirts of Amersham, in Buckinghamshire. All external finishes are new, and extensive uninterrupted glazed areas to the front of the property take full advantage of the commanding views over the surrounding countryside.

This project is the perfect demonstration as to just how far you can go with a tired and uninspiring starting point. An creative approach from 3s Architects, a client open to ideas, and expert execution from the outset through to completion have successfully transformed this, now, impressive residence. Large, open plan living areas, with sliding panels providing adaptable living accommodation, this wonderful home now provides the observer with pleasure and amazement at every turn. A structural glass and walnut staircase sees the steps appear to float up to the next level. The clean, contemporary detailing is everywhere, from completely frameless double glazed bay windows from L2i, through to crisp shadow gap details framing recessed skirtings and architraves throughout the project. Simple, architectural features abound, with walk-in wet room showers, cantilevered washbasins, wall-mounted taps...the house has become the perfect example of how simple can sometimes be best, with the end result providing a comfortable home to live in, areas to be social or private, whilst always being easy to keep clean. The environmental performance has received a significant boost, with substantial external insulation increasing the thermal efficiency of the house, all concealed beneath a high-tech thin coat render system, which provides a beautiful but enduring external finish to this impressive home. The house has benefitted in so many ways, it is easy to see why it now occupies its commanding position in the Buckinghamshire countryside with a renewed and revived confidence, fit to take on the challenges of the coming decades.
