Craneford Way, Twickenham

Completed: November 2017

Completed in 2014, this sympathetic remodelling of a 1930s art deco semi-detached house in Twickenham has transformed a very tired dwelling into a dramatic and stylish home fit for the 21st Century. With a budget of £600k, the house has been enlarged with a fantastic Master Suite to the Loft, and a side and rear extension including a sunken TV Snug.

A top-to-bottom refurbishment, along with a significant enlargement of this family home was the simple brief when undertaking this project. The property’s location, in a densely populated residential area of Twickenham, and its positioning within a largely well preserved area, presented their own challenges. Every stage of the planning and execution of the project therefore had to recognise and incorporated the art deco heritage into the transformation of this handsome property. Careful consideration was given to every architectural detail, from the proportions of the crittal window frames, the design and finish to the new, bespoke, high-security hardwood front door, and through to the external landscaping, everything needed to be considered, designed, and executed correctly. The result is a house which appears to have always looked as it is now, except for the fact that it is completely suited to the requirements of the modern family, and simultaneously, the environmental performance has been significantly improved, with high performance glazing from Vitrocsa and High Quality Joinery, and significant up-grading to the insulation and heating systems. The Ground Floor is mostly open plan, but with areas well defined with a stunning double sided wood burning fireplace, and a sunken, framelessly glazed snug / media room, with panoramic views of the rear garden. Ingenious planning has seen the inclusion of a ground floor WC where no space existed, beautifully panelled in oak, has truly created something out of nothing! Finishes were a priority, with resin flooring to the bathrooms, and LED lighting creating subtle but dramatic lighting effects. A resounding success, both for a family to live in, and for everyone to look at.
